I've been dreaming of a winter wonderland full of oh-so-much cozy and simplicity. With subtle touches of Scandinavian and folk-loric influences. Here's how I transformed this space to bring on those winter vibes with a budget of $15!
I've partnered with a few other lovely bloggers for this exciting challenge! So be sure to pop over and check out what my talented friends have created! I have included their links at the bottom of this post.
In addition to the challenge budget being $15, we also had to use clearance items! I really struggled with that aspect of the challenge. This time of year, clearance spots are the place to be and were nearly all cleaned out. So, I improvised by putting my diy skills to good use, made a visit to the local Target dollar spot, and shopped my home for what I already owned.
Here's what I bought:
Here's what I spent:
- Charcoal gray checkered ribbon on clearance for $1.50
- White paper banner with cutouts on clearance for $4
- Spritz brand silver paper straws for $3
- 2 Faux fur stockings for $3 each, totaling $6
Grand Total of $14.50
What I had on hand:
- Red and white butcher string
- Blunt sewing needle
- Book pages
- Garland and Slim tree from 3 years ago
- Hearth and Hand wood bead garland - was gifted to me (and it retails for only $13)
Here's what I did:
I took book pages and burned the edges. Then, I created a simple backdrop by using sticky packing tape to attach the pages to the wall and to each other. Super easy, fun, and free! Woohoo!
Next, I added the garland and ribbon. Both measured 12 feet which was just enough for my slim style, 6ft tree. Hung up the delicate paper banner. I just love the pretty cutouts - do you see the bird motif? So cute!
Now it was time for DIY! I created these geometric ornaments for my tree out of the silver paper straws and string. This type of ornament is called Himmeli or Pajaki in Polish. I absolutely love making these! It takes about 10 minutes to make each ornament and I just eye-balled the lengths of the straw I used. So easy and fun to do, especially with children! I included my very own step by step visual tutorial below!
Here's a close up of the himmelis hanging on the tree!
Aren't they adorable?!
Finally, I hung up the faux fur stockings and here is my tree in all her minimalistic glory...
This was such a fun challenge! Did I accomplish it perfectly? No, I did not. But I rarely ever achieve perfection lol! I definitely did stay within the $15 budget and that's a win in my (pocket)book!
