Summer is here! My kidlets are on break from school and we have been tending to the garden! We have corn, gourds, asparagus, and blooms-a-plenty! My current obsession is over my zinnias!
Nature truly created something spectacular and ever so magical when it designed the zinnia. These candy-colored blooms bring so much vibrant color and a seemingly endless supply of fresh cut blooms for garden fresh bouquets all summer long!
These lovely little beauties are related to sunflowers and daisies, yet carry such a uniqueness wrapped up in their many delicate rows of petals. I'm just absolutely smitten with them! Lucky for me, zinnias thrive beautifully in the desert landscape I call home! (zone 9B)
I planted my zinnias during the first week of March and just a month later, I was gifted the best color explosion I could ever dream of! I simply clipped the blooms about 2-3 days after blooming to trigger re-bloom and new growth. I made sure to clip the blooms just above a set of new leaves that would branch off into a new stem. (the photo below shows a close up of where I clipped.)
I made sure to check the moisture levels of my zinnias daily. My zone is prone to scorching and evaporating water ridiculously quickly. I purchased my seeds form Urban Farmer, an Indiana based non-gmo seed company. I got the "Cut and Come again" variety for only $2.50! I have nothing, but great things to say about this company, plus their customer service is the best! (this is not an ad, just my humble opinion.)
Now that I've gushed over these colorful little beauties, I truly hope you'll get out there and get your summer growing on! Let me know if you are growing zinnias, too - we can even start our very own zinnia club ;)
… Stay tuned for a bedroom re-fresh tour and more gardening updates to come!
